What is Tooth Extraction?

At Taylorsville Implant Center, Dr. Jose Hernandez-Gil performs tooth extractions with skill and precision. This common procedure involves gently removing a tooth that’s too damaged, decayed, or crowded to remain. Although it might sound daunting, most extractions are quick and comfortable thanks to advanced techniques and local anesthesia. Dr. Hernandez-Gil ensures you feel at ease every step of the way and provides clear aftercare guidance to support a smooth recovery and protect your long-term oral health.

Process of Tooth Extraction Treatment

1. Initial Evaluation & Decision

We will assess the health of your tooth. If it’s too damaged or decayed to be saved, extraction may be recommended to protect your overall oral health.

2. Numbing The Area

Then, the actual procedure begins with numbing the treatment site to ensure you’re completely comfortable and pain-free throughout the extraction.

3. Loosening & Removing The Tooth

Once numb, Dr. Hernandez-Gil gently loosens the damaged tooth and carefully lifts it from its socket using specialized tools to minimize discomfort and preserve surrounding bone and tissue.

4. Protecting The Area After Removal

Gauze is placed over the site to control bleeding and begin healing. In some cases, dissolvable sutures are used to close the area for added protection.

5. Post-Extraction Care Instructions

After the procedure, you may be given antibiotics and/or pain medication to aid healing and prevent infection. Follow all instructions exactly as recommended.

Recovering From Tooth Extraction Process

Most of our patients are surprised by how easy the recovery period is after an extraction. If you experience discomfort, you can apply an ice pack to the cheek area and take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication.

Take all prescribed antibiotics and pain medication, if we recommend them. You’ll want to eat soft foods for as long as you’re instructed and carefully clean around the treatment site to prevent infection.

Our Recommendation

We truly recommend to go with Dental Implants to complete your precious smile. While removing a compromised tooth can be an integral part of protecting your oral health, it doesn’t stop there. In nearly all cases other than extracted wisdom teeth, Dr. Hernandez-Gil will recommend a dental implant to replace your missing tooth. Implants are the only treatment that replaces a missing tooth from root to crown, guarding against the bone loss that results from even a single missing tooth.

Dr. Hernandez-Gil has in-depth training in dental implant surgery and restoration, meaning the placement of a crown, bridge, or denture. We leverage advanced dental technology to provide a solid foundation for your smile that can last a lifetime with the right care. He can also provide bone grafts at our Salt Lake City Office–sometimes on the same day as your extraction–to protect and strengthen your jaw.

FAQs

es, we can remove erupted wisdom teeth. If your teeth are impacted (trapped beneath the gums or bone), we’ll refer you to a trusted oral surgeon for specialized care.

Not at all! The area is fully numbed with local anesthesia, and sedation options like oral or IV sedation are available to keep you relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure.

A dry socket occurs when the protective blood clot is dislodged after tooth extraction. To prevent it, avoid smoking, using straws, or any suction activity. We’ll provide aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing.

es! Impacted teeth - especially canines are common. In most cases, Dr. Hernandez-Gil can safely perform the entire procedure right in our office.
